Experts Divided This feels very current at the moment. We are reliant on experts to advise best practice on the Coronavirus , yet the experts can’t agree and opinion is split hence the physical dividing up of the word and sharp cracks and fissures in the painting. The bright orange is reminiscent of how covid 19 is being portrayed. Love will tear us apart. In this piece I drew in charcoal and pastel two separate reclining nudes and tore them out of their backgrounds and then put them in juxtaposing positions and created a rip line between them to suggest separation, discord, ‘tearing apart’. With the virus we are all feeling torn apart from our loved ones who ever they may be. However maybe the white floaty suggestion of fabric entwining them both perhaps leaves some hope they can reconnect again and all is not yet lost. In ‘Faiths Divided’ I have given the suggestion of different places of worship all juxtaposed together against a bright swirling stormy night sky that suggests lightening or possibly a conflagration. In the foreground are lit up grave stones reminding us that human life is not eternal. We cannot protect ourselves against death. The schism is the fracture between the faiths in society that leads to a visual ‘ clashing of symbols’ , disunity and turbulence. The ideas for the colours and backgrounds were inspired by John Pipers paintings where he often did dramatic skies and colour palettes eg in his painting ‘ Gothic Folly’ . Piper often had religious buildings and derelict buildings as a theme and I used the Folly at Stowe as a starting point for my painting. Schism on the shoreline . I painted and ripped lots of different papers and collaged them together to create an indication of sea and shore line. I then added more paint and pastel to help bring the collaged layers together and help create movement. Land and sea seem to be the main physical division or natural schism of our world and the key elements that make up the planet. The message I wish to convey is we have to respect the wildness of the oceans and the natural habitat of the shore to preserve our planet for future generations.
